News — Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny released a new album yesterday, and a Wellesley College professor -- and Bad Bunny expert -- says it's a"seriously important" piece of work.
, a Wellesley College professor who teaches , and who is co-inventor of the - a free online resource exploring all things related to the rapper and his connection to Puerto Rico-- notes that Debí Tirar Más Fotos (which translates to “I Should Have Taken More Photos”) comes out on the heels of a historic Puerto Rican election where, for the first time, a candidate supporting Puerto Rican independence earned a critical piece of the vote.
Rivera-Rideau says the album is important because of its overtly Puerto Rican focus: It features overtly political lyrics that tackle current issues like gentrification, corruption and displacement; and also showcases unique musical fusions that blend reggaeton and pop with traditional Puerto Rican genres, including plena and bomba.
Rivera-Rideau is happy to talk about the album and why it matters; contact Stacey Schmeidel, director of media relations, [email protected].
