News — From fertilizer to secret beauty formula, a research team from the , Chulalongkorn University, has discovered that the peels of Pathum Thani’s Hom Thong Pathum bananas contain substances that reduce inflammation from acne and restore skin moisture. This has led to the development of “anti-acne film-forming solution” skincare products, providing consumers with more natural product options and a sustainable way to add value to agricultural waste.”
Bananas – A local fruit widely recognized for their versatility and health benefits. Every part of the plant—from leaves and trunks to flowers (banana blossoms) and fruits—offers unique uses. In this case, the peel of Homthong Pathum Banana, often considered agricultural waste, has proven to be valuable. A team from the Halal Science Research Center, Chulalongkorn University has discovered the hidden “secret of nature to a beautiful skin” within this banana peel and further developed it into a skincare product: anti-acne film-forming solution from Hom Thong Pathum banana peel extract
“We often overlook the peel of the Hom Thong Pathum banana. Most are discarded as agricultural waste, while some are used as fertilizer. Therefore, we tried extracting the banana peels and found that they contain important substances that can fight inflammation and restore the skin,” said Ms. Baddareeya Sohsansa, one of the researchers from the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University.
Hom Thong Pathum Banana peels: A valuable waste product
The research team found that Hom Thong Pathum banana peels are rich in phenolic acid and flavonoids, which have significant anti-inflammatory potential. They can inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and the inflammatory substance TNF-α by up to 73%.
“Other types of bananas also contain natural properties, but the amount and concentration of the active ingredients in Hom Thong Pathum banana peels are more potent. They help reduce inflammation and restore moisture to the skin more effectively than other types of bananas. More importantly, the extract from these Cavendish banana peels is as effective as anti-acne compound but is safer and does not cause skin irritation.
Natural Skincare Innovation: Anti-Acne Film-Forming Treatment
Discovering the beauty secret of the Hom Thong Pathum banana peel led the research team to develop a clear film product for acne treatment and inflammation relief under the brand name The Skinov’e, which is derives from combining two words: “Skin” and “Innovation.”
“This product is an innovation in skincare. It is a clear, thin, light film-forming solution that users can apply on their face or desired skin areas and leave on all day without worrying about oiliness or stickiness. It is also easy to wash off.”
Skincare that meets the needs of sustainable development
Currently, this anti-acne film-forming innovation is available under the brand name The Skinov’e. The research team also plans to expand the production and distribution of this innovation to international markets.
“Our research and innovation benefit consumers, reducing the use of chemicals in acne treatment and also helping farmers. Bananas are a fruit abundant in our country, and using banana peels leftover from the agricultural sector helps reduce waste and increase farmers’ income, conforming to the concept of using waste resources to their fullest potential. This aligns with the , especially in terms of sustainable production and consumption,” Ms. Baddareeya concluded.
