News — Irvine, Calif., Jan. 15, 2025 — The University of California, Irvine Police Department has received accreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. This places the UCIPD in the top 10 percent of university police agencies nationwide. IACLEA accreditation demonstrates that the department has consistently upheld the utmost standards of professionalism, accountability and safety.

“Achieving IACLEA accreditation highlights our agency’s commitment to excellence in every aspect of our operations,” said UCIPD Chief Liz Griffin. “Everyone – from police officers to professional staff – has proven their commitment to work at the highest level of their profession in order to serve the UCI community.”

IACLEA assessors spent five weeks dissecting the university police department’s performance across key areas that included operations, investigations, dispatch, community engagement, crime prevention, training, property and evidence, and professional standards.

The UCIPD not only fulfilled the mandatory requirements but exceeded expectations by achieving 93 percent of the “extra credit” standards – far surpassing the IACLEA’s minimum requirements. This accomplishment was noted by the assessors, who praised the department’s capacity for sustained excellence.

“For the university, this achievement underscores its priority of campus safety as a cornerstone of student success and institutional excellence,” said Mary Lou Ortiz, chief financial officer and vice chancellor for finance and administration. “This recognition places UC Irvine at the forefront of campus safety initiatives, serving as a model across the UC system as well as among universities nationwide.”

Created in 1965, the UC Irvine Police Department has grown from a few officers into a sophisticated law enforcement agency with 47 full-time police officers and nearly 100 professional staff members, including dispatchers, administrative analysts and public safety personnel. Safeguarding the UC Irvine campus, the UCI Health medical center in Orange and the new UCI Health medical center in Irvine, the department possesses an extensive range of capabilities, including a systemwide response team, a bike patrol unit, K-9 crews, a mental health co-response team and an investigations unit.

The UCIPD accreditation is valid for four years, during which the department will submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. For more information on UCIPD services and initiatives, please visit the.
