Nicole Ngo is an academic expert in public health, the impact of climate change on health, environmental policy and urban sustainability. At the University of Oregon, Nicole is an associate professor in the School of Planning, Public Policy and Management. Nicole鈥檚 research focuses on public health and transportation. Previous projects include evaluating the effects of vehicle emission standards on air pollution and health, measuring urban air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa, and examining the effects of climate change on health and transportation choices.

Dr. Martenies is an assistant professor in the department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois. Her research is focused on the independent and joint effects of ambient and pollution and neighborhood-level exposures on childhood health outcomes. In particular, she is interested in studying prenatal and early-life exposures to traffic emissions, features of the build environment, and social determinants like poverty influence birth weight, childhood obesity, and other indicators of long-term health risk. She received her PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Michigan in 2017. She also holds anMPH in Environmental Health Science and Policy from the George Washington University.

Deborah Cory-Slechta, PhD, is a professor of Environmental Medicine, Neuroscience, and Public Health Sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Her research focuses on the impact environmental toxins, particularly ultra-fine particles found in air pollution, have on brain development and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Professor Cory-Slechta has served on numerous national review and advisory panels for the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Center for Toxicological Research, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Centers for Disease Control.

Tobias Gerken is a broadly trained environmental and atmospheric scientist teaching courses about environmental science and sustainability as part of the Integrated Science and Technology major. Topics include climate change, air and water pollution, ecological processes as well as global ecosystem change.
His research focuses on land-atmosphere interactions. He is particularly interested in the surface flux dynamics of water, energy, and trace gases between ecosystems and atmosphere and their impacts on weather and climate.
He has also investigated the role of agricultural land management in the Northern Great Plains on rainfall and the role of feedbacks between land and atmosphere for the rapid development of drought.
Tobias Gerken has conducted field research in the Brazilian Amazon and on the Tibetan Plateau to better understand the exchange energy, water, and carbon dioxide between ecosystems and atmosphere and how this may be affected by environmental change and human activities.
He earned a Diplom (BSc & MSc equivalent) in environmental science and a doctorate in environmental and atmospheric science at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. He formerly was an assistant research professor at Penn State’s Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and a research associate at Montana State University’s Department of Land Resources and Environmental Science.
