As the nation celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, University of Maryland Carey School of Law Professor  author of the recently published book Constitutional Orphan: Gender Equality and the Nineteenth Amendment (Oxford University Press 2020), is available to discuss the amendment’s complicated legacy and its impact on today’s voters.  

Professor Monopoli is the Sol & Carlyn Hubert Professor of Law at Maryland Carey Law and a Visiting Scholar at the Moller Institute, Churchill College, University of Cambridge. She is the founder of the Women, Leadership & Equality Program at Maryland Carey Law which  provides an opportunity for students to engage in critical thinking about cutting-edge issues in gender and leadership.   

She is prepared to discuss past and present issues surrounding women and the vote including: 

  • Legal and political developments in the decade after the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. 
  • Little-known divisions among former suffragists around support for the Equal Rights Amendment, and how legal progressives opposed that amendment.  
  • Racism within the suffrage movement. 
  • How women's votes will impact the upcoming presidential election.
