News — Rockville, Md.—The ARVO Foundation congratulates Mudit Tyagi, MD — 2024 recipient of the Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery. Established by Ingrid Kreissig, MD, through the ARVO Foundation, the $30,000 award recognizes excellence in the understanding of the mechanisms of retinal disease requiring surgical management, innovative approaches to management, and/or outcomes of surgical treatment.
A vitreoretinal surgeon, Tyagi is currently head of Retina Services at L V Prasad Eye Institute (India). The award recognizes his work exploring the role of fibrin glue as a tamponade agent in rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. "The treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments involves doing a vitrectomy and then subsequently using a tamponade agent like silicone oil or intraocular gas," explains Tyagi. "However, these conventional tamponade agents have their own set of complications including the need for post operative positioning, risk of rise of intraocular pressure and a delayed visual recovery. The use of fibrin glue obviates these complications and allows for an early visual recovery and also helps in avoiding the need to give any strict post operative positioning for patients."
The Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery highlights the next generation of curious, enterprising investigators who seek to optimize functional outcomes for patients needing retinal surgery.
"This award is a great honor and I am thankful to the ARVO Foundation for considering our work to be worthy of this award," says Tyagi. He notes the recognition not only helps in providing validation to their technique, but will aid in making it more popular, recognizable and acceptable as well. Tyagi adds, "It will also help in allowing us to explore more options to develop further collaborations with other surgeons and groups who are willing to explore the potential of use of fibrin glue in various retinal surgeries. The generous grant that comes along with this award can also allow us to fund some of the experiments and research projects that we are doing to explore visual functions in eyes with retinal disorders."
