As a third grader, Tahira Reid Smith 鈥00, 鈥04, Ph.D., was already thinking like an inventor.聽So, when her school, PS 97 in the Bronx, New York, held a poster contest where students were asked to depict something each of them wished he or she had, she didn鈥檛 draw a typical childhood fantasy. She designed a machine.聽Like many children in the Bronx, Reid Smith loved playing double Dutch.

The findings support the idea of forming individualized treatment plans based on a person鈥檚 biological sex. The research will be presented at the 2024 Integrative Physiology of Exercise conference, Nov. 20鈥22, in State College, Pennsylvania.

The airflow from an indoor badminton court鈥檚 HVAC system and cross ventilation can affect the path of a birdie and have a significant role in play, but research published in Physics of Fluids proposes that different roof configurations could help mitigate wind drift. The authors recommend that important badminton games be played on courts with a barrel roof and a ventilation opening. The team modeled the airflow in a barrel roof stadium with different ventilation opening directions and tested this against a simulation of a flat roof to understand the roof effects.
