News — WASHINGTON – The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM, formerly AACC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Ian Young will assume the position of editor in chief for ADLM’s The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine, effective January 1, 2026.

Dr. Young serves as the chief scientific advisor for the Department of Health in Belfast, Northern Ireland, U.K., and as the Department’s director of research and development for health and social care. Additionally, he serves as professor of medicine at Queen’s University Belfast and consultant chemical pathologist at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. As the current deputy editor and past associate editor of ADLM’s journal Clinical Chemistry, he will bring to this new role expertise in reviewing clinically relevant laboratory medicine papers, as well as extensive experience with the practical studies that The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine showcases. Dr. Young has also authored more than 450 research papers.

In order to further its position as a community journal, ADLM intends to transition The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine to a Gold Open Access business model concurrent with Dr. Young’s start as editor in chief. This means that papers published in the journal will be permanently and freely available online for anyone to read. In addition to overseeing this transition, Dr. Young will foster the journal’s ongoing development and differentiation from Clinical Chemistry and other reputable journals in the field of laboratory medicine.

“Dr. Young’s broad experience with laboratory medicine and related disciplines — as well as his keen awareness of new advances in the field — make him an excellent fit for this role,” said ADLM President Dr. Anthony Killeen. “He will play a vital role in managing The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine’s transition to an open access journal that provides trustworthy scientific knowledge to all. I am excited to see the journal continue to mature and distinguish itself under both this new business model and Dr. Young’s esteemed leadership.”

“It’s an honor to be selected to serve as editor in chief for The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine,” said Dr. Young. “Since its launch in 2016, this journal has provided laboratory medicine professionals with the latest translational research so that they can develop innovative solutions to challenging patient health problems. I look forward to collaborating with the journal’s editorial board and ADLM staff to maintain The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine’s commitment to excellence while also guiding its growth.”

Prior to accepting the role of editor in chief, Young held a number of other leadership roles in the field of laboratory medicine. He served as past president of the U.K. Association for Laboratory Medicine and as chair of the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine and of the scientific division of the International Federation for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. He holds an MD and a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Queen’s University Belfast.
