News — April 18, 2025—April 22 marks the 55th Earth Day, and this year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” As newsrooms prepare stories, CU Boulder experts are available for to discuss innovative solutions to the climate crisis, including: labeling food with details about its carbon footprint; sustainable energy options for AI data centers; and biodegradable fake nails.
Food labeling
Zia Mehrabi, assistant professor of Environmental Studies can discuss how the agriculture and food system is contributing to climate change. He can also talk about ways to address the climate crisis while ensuring food security for all.

Bri-Mathias Hodge, professor of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, can discuss issues related to AI’s growing power demand. He and his colleagues recently launched projects to explore energy storage options that could enable data centers to use more renewable energy.

Lázaro Vásquez, graduate student in the ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder, is an expert in sustainable fashion and beauty technologies that consider the full life cycle of products. She recently unveiled a new kind of press-on nails that are biodegradable, colorful and customizable.
