News — Professor David D. Yao, an HKIAS Senior Fellow and a distinguished academic known for his extensive research and contributions in the field of industrial engineering and operations research, visited City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) from 14-24 March 2025. His visit featured a series of engaging sessions.

The visit began with a warm welcome by Professor Anderson Shum, the Vice-President (Research) at CityUHK on 17 March. During the week, Professor Yao held discussions with various scholars at CityUHK including Professor Shuk Han Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) and Associate Vice-President (Research), Professor Youhua Frank Chen, Head of the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations, Professor Chuangyin Dang, Head of the Systems Engineering. These discussions aimed to explore future collaborative opportunities, strengthen ties, and foster joint research initiatives between CityUHK and Columbia University.

A key highlight of the visit was a “Mini Workshop on AI and Fintech” presented by Professor David D. Yao, Professor Houmin Yan, Chair Professor of Management Sciences of the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations and Professor Guangwu Liu, Professor of the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Choon Ling Sia, Associate Dean (Research) of the College of Business.

Professor Yao, delivered a compelling talk on "Emission Trading System and Risk Hedging." His presentation focused on the integration of carbon emission costs into supply chain production decisions and the development of dynamic hedging strategies on the emission trading system (ETS). He also discussed the potential impact of these strategies on the adoption of clean technologies and the connection to tokenized clean-energy real-world assets.

In the workshop, Professor Houmin Yan discussed "AI-Driven Credit Risk Management Research and Development at AIFT for Amazon Seller Financing" and Professor Guangwu Liu presented "Automated Market Making: Research and Innovation at AIFT".

The “Mini Workshop on AI and Fintech” provided an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and students.
