News — Richard Redett III, M.D., has been named physician-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) and vice dean for clinical affairs for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Redett is a professor and director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a professor of pediatrics.
Redett will lead strategy development and alignment for the clinical practice of Johns Hopkins-employed faculty and will coordinate with Johns Hopkins Health System-employed physician leadership across JHM. In this capacity, he will work in close collaboration with hospital and department leadership and the Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians. He will also serve as president of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Practice Association.
An internationally renowned pediatric plastic surgeon, Redett and his team are known for their innovative surgical procedures — including hand, upper extremity and genital transplantations. His areas of clinical expertise include cleft lip and palate surgery, facial paralysis, pediatric burn surgery and reconstruction, and genital reconstruction.
Since joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2003, Redett has established himself as a highly accomplished physician leader, investigator and educator. Under his leadership as director of plastic and reconstructive surgery, the department has expanded its research portfolio, strengthened multidisciplinary clinical programs, enhanced its residency and fellowship programs, and further developed clinical and research collaborations with other JHM departments. As the interim vice dean for clinical affairs for the past 14 months, Redett has collaborated on many important initiatives, including enhancing ambulatory capacity and Johns Hopkins’ expansion into Northern Virginia.
“Dr. Redett is an innovative, collaborative leader who brings extensive experience in clinical practice leadership and a deep commitment to Johns Hopkins’ mission,” said Theodore L. DeWeese, M.D., dean of the medical faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “He is exactly the person we need to take on this pivotal role.”
Among his organizational leadership roles, Redett directs the Johns Hopkins Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic, a multispecialty center that cares for 650 children each year. Previously, he was director of pediatric plastic surgery and of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Burn Center.
“Dr. Redett is a results-driven, exceptional physician leader, and we are thrilled to have him as the inaugural Johns Hopkins Medicine physician-in-chief,” said Kevin Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Redett has a strong commitment to international health and has conducted many teaching-related medical missions to Central and South America and Africa. He serves on the board of directors of ReSurge International, a nonprofit organization that builds access to life-changing surgeries in low-income countries by training local surgeons.
Redett received undergraduate degrees in biology and psychology at Emory University and a medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He completed general surgery and plastic surgery residencies at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a pediatric plastic surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
