On Feb. 22, the University of California San Diego brought together a panel of industry experts and esteemed faculty to kick off the university鈥檚 鈥淓venings of Nonconventional Wisdom鈥� online event series hosted in celebration of the university's 60th anniversary. To continue the timely dialogue around COVID-19 and vaccines, we reached back out to a few of the event panelists plus a leader from UC San Diego鈥檚 Return to Learn Program Dr. Robert 鈥淐hip鈥� Schooley to answer questions submitted by the audience.

Today, colleges across the nation are making critical decisions for the coming academic year. For some, all courses will be online; for others, the decision may be to have some classes offered in person, and the rest conducted in remote or hybrid formats. Higher education is embracing virtual learning in what could become the norm in a post-pandemic future鈥攍eading to the question: Does remote instruction and cheating go hand in hand?

A web-based tool recently developed by UC San Diego researchers under an NSF grant to perform data-driven predictive modeling and real-time tracking of fires has already been viewed about one million times and generated more than 115,000 unique visitors since the outbreak of numerous wildfires across Northern California late last weekend.

Emma Farley, an assistant professor at UC San Diego鈥檚 Division of Biological Sciences and School of Medicine, has been awarded the NIH Director鈥檚 New Innovator Award. Melissa Gymrek, an assistant professor in the School of Medicine and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, will receive the NIH Director鈥檚 Early Independence Award.

In two weeks, UC San Diego Health orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sonya Ahmed will head to Lillehammer, Norway for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Ahmed is a former elite athlete herself鈥攃ompeting internationally in gymnastics and in collegiate pole vaulting. But this time she鈥檚 heading to the world stage not as an athlete, but as a doctor.

Professor emerita Margaret C. Marshall, founder of the dance program at the University of California, San Diego, has established with her husband, Mark G. Marshall, a $100,000 endowment fund to continue the legacy of dance in the Division of Arts and Humanities. The Margaret C. Marshall Dance Endowmentwill provide support for undergraduate dance productions in UC San Diego鈥檚 Department of Theatre and Dance in keeping with the eclectic curriculum Marshall established during her tenure.
