The left slide shows disrupted and damaged tissue brought about by necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in the intestinal lining of a neonatal mouse. A dramatic difference is seen in the right slide which shows an intact and well-organized lining after Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers treated that mouse with a novel protective agent, J11, for glial cells (nerve-supporting cells in the intestine).
