The signal lights from Bob and Charlie are multiplexed by a dense wavelength division multiplexer (DWDM) before being measured by Alice. Bob and Charlie each have a laser diode (LD), a silicon-based encoder chip, and an off-chip variable optical attenuator (VOA).
