Terri Erbacher, PhD, a clinical associate professor of psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, studies grief, and says that it鈥檚 actually perfectly normal for people to feel grief over the loss of a celebrity, and many times, it can feel the same as losing an extended family member.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e larger than life鈥攖hey鈥檙e who we aspire to be,鈥 she says. And now, with so many celebrities sharing their daily lives on social media, that feeling of familiarity is even more palpable. 鈥淲e鈥檙e now being supplied with intimate details of their personal lives on a daily basis,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hat can make it feel even more like we鈥檝e lost a family member.鈥
She notes it鈥檚 important to be respectful of other鈥檚 feelings鈥攁nd our own鈥攚hen it comes to grieving a celebrity.
