, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Professor Emeritus of Peace Studies at Notre Dame's  offers the following comments on the movement of the Doomsday Clock. In addition, he can comment on nuclear proliferation and sanctions re: North Korea and Iran. Lopez was chair of the board of directors of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists from 1998-2003 and presided over the change in the Doomsday Clock in February 2002. Journalists are welcome to email him here:

"Today’s resetting of the Doomsday Clock 20 seconds closer to midnight is profoundly disturbing. The Clock now indicates that the combined threats of nuclear weapons proliferation, climate disasters, and cyber-generated misinformation and war place us beyond any prior moment of Cold War peril. Most significant is the renunciation by current US leadership of the agreements and treaties that have built a nuclear stability infrastructure for the globe for decades. Moreover, the clock underscores that time is running out for human survival due to the inability or direct unwillingness of leaders to cooperatively respond to these devastating threats to our planet.
