, a leader in knowledge management solutions for healthcare, today launched STS Cardiothoracic Surgery (STS-CTS) on the Unbound Platform™ to disseminate cardiothoracic expertise to trainees and practitioners around the world.
In the past, cardiothoracic surgeons shared their expertise by writing book chapters that were published in print every 5-10 years by commercial publishers. In contrast, STS member surgeons and staff developed STS-CTS as an alternative—to be continuously updated and accessible on the users' device of choice.
A diverse team of STS leaders working with digital content experts from Unbound Medicine developed a new approach to encoding and disseminating cardiothoracic surgical knowledge. More than 600 STS member surgeons now author and regularly update evidence-based, multifaceted content in uPub™—Unbound's online authoring and content management system. After online editing and approval by an editorial board, the content is published instantaneously worldwide—to smartphone and tablet apps as well as to a full-featured website.
“STS leadership and member surgeons needed a way to disseminate and utilize cardiothoracic surgical knowledge whenever and wherever they need it,” said Elaine Weiss, CEO/Executive Director at The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. “Leveraging STS member expertise with Unbound's end-to-end platform and institutional sales capabilities, we can deliver the digital resources our members requested in the format required.”
Updated regularly, STS-CTS is divided into two works, Pearson's General Thoracic Surgery and Adult & Congenital Cardiac Surgery. It is augmented by thousands of new anatomic illustrations, surgical images, procedural videos, and links to evidence in the medical literature. Native apps for Apple® and Android™ devices are fully integrated with the companion website and both are available for one price for individual users and institutional site-license customers.
“The vision we share with STS is to help trainees master their field and surgical teams answer clinical questions wherever they arise,” says Bill Detmer, MD, CEO of Unbound Medicine. “We are excited to publish the work of STS surgeons who do a remarkable job as educators and providers of advanced specialty care.”
