Spangler is one of the world's leading experts in tobacco epidemiology and was the keynote speaker for 2004 World Health Organization Tobacco and Community Health Conference in New Delhi, India. He founded the first physician-run tobacco-cessation clinic in North Carolina and was recently awarded $1.6 million grant to develop tobacco cessation curriculum for medical schools across the United States. He has won several prestigious awards including the Association of Teachers of Preventative Medicine Program of the Year Award and the Behavioral Sciences Forum Program of the Year Award. He is currently co-Principal Investigator on a longitudinal study of tobacco use among students at 11 colleges and universities in NC and VA.

David Price, BSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP

Dr. David Price 鈥 Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University since 2006 and was Chief of Family Medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences from 2004-2018. While most of his career has been as a comprehensive family physician in major urban centres (including Vancouver and Hamilton), he is proud of the fact that he gained significant clinical experience in a number of rural and northern communities. During his tenure as Chair, the Department has experienced substantial growth such that it now graduates over 100 family medicine residents annually, has a full-time faculty of over 40 with approximately 1,400 part-time faculty and 200 staff. The total Department budget overseen is now just under $40 M annually. The research enterprise within the department has also grown proportionately, with approximately $19 M managed annually and is recognized both nationally and internationally for its work in primary care.

Through his leadership roles at the University and Hospital, and his involvement with local, regional, and provincial government bodies where he acts as a consultant and advisor, he has developed expertise in primary care reform and health care policy development. As the Chair of the Provincial (Ontario) Expert Advisory Panel on Primary Care (2013-2014) he was instrumental in helping produce 鈥淧atient Care Groups: A new model of population based primary health care for Ontario鈥 (鈥淧rice Report鈥). Locally, he was the founding director of the Maternity Centre of Hamilton; a multidisciplinary centre that cares for prenatal and intrapartum patients. Dr. Price was also instrumental in helping to create the academic Family Health Team at McMaster University, an interprofessional team, currently serving over 40,000 patients in the Hamilton area. He was a key player in the development of the $85 M, David Braley Health Sciences Centre, a six-story, 185,000 sq. ft. home for Family Medicine and Hamilton Public Health in the downtown core. He has participated in over $6M in peer reviewed research funding (> $1M as lead) and has been the lead in over $15 M of other funding from a variety of Governments and Agencies. David has authored over 35 peer reviewed publications (half of these as either lead or senior author) and published numerous other articles/book chapters.

In April 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, he was tasked with chairing the Primary Care Advisory Table on behalf of Ontario鈥檚 Ministry of Health.

Dr. Gina Agarwal is a Professor at McMaster University in the Departments of Family Medicine and Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact and an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Aging. She is a practicing Family Physician, Primary Care Epidemiologist, and the McMaster Family Medicine Levitt Scholar. She is a member of the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging and the McMaster Institute for Health Equity.

Her research achievements have been recognized with the CIHR-IHSPR Article of the Year Award (2019), the prestigious Mid-Career Researcher Award from the North American Primary Care Research Group (2018), and an Award of Excellence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (2016). 

As the Director of the Vulnerable Individuals in Primary Care (VIP) Research Lab, she focuses on improving primary health care access for vulnerable populations, ensuring people in need receive appropriate care at the right time and in the right place. 

As the Principal Investigator of the McMaster Community Paramedicine Research Team, she has driven health system change including the uptake of the innovative Community Paramedicine at Clinic (CP@clinic) program by 51% of Ontario Paramedic Services and its national (e.g. BCEHS) and international (e.g. UK, Australia) scale-up. 

She has worked extensively in social housing to improve the health of this vulnerable population and identify healthcare usage patterns. Her quantitative and qualitative research, including complex pragmatic studies, uses rigorous methods to produce novel insight into the unmet health needs of traditionally difficult-to-reach populations and determines cost-effective and targeted healthcare solutions nationally and globally. 

She regularly supervises undergraduate, master鈥檚 and doctoral students.

Family Medicine, narrative medicine

Dr. Joyce Zazulak is a Full Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University and practices medicine at the Maternity Centre of Hamilton.

Dr. Zazulak鈥檚 academic areas of interest include teaching about communication skills and patient-centered care, Narrative Medicine, and Health Humanities. She is the Faculty Development Director for the Department of Family Medicine, as well as the Faculty Lead for Academic Support and Resident Remediation. Dr. Zazulak  has a particular interest in the use of art and visual literacy in the training of healthcare professionals and, in collaboration with the McMaster Museum of Art, has developed a visual literacy program for family medicine residents called 鈥淭he Art of Seeing.鈥  Dr. Zazulak is also one of the co-creators of the Indigenous Teaching Through Art Program.

Hallie Zwibel, D.O.

Hallie Zwibel is New York Institute of Technology's Medical Director for its Academic Health Care Centers, Director of the Center for Sports Medicine, and one of the institution's experts in esports medicine. Zwibel earned his bachelor's degree from Binghamton University in 2007. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011 and completed his residency in family practice at North Shore-LIJ Plainview Hospital in 2014. During his residency, Zwibel completed the Training in Policy Studies and Physician Leadership Institute fellowships. Most recently, in 2018, Zwibel earned a Masters in Public Health from University at Albany-SUNY.

Peter Bidey, DO, MSED, FACOFP

Dr. Peter Bidey has served on the faculty of PCOM since 2012. Since 2018, he has acted as vice chair (and previously, medical director) of the Department of Family Medicine, and most recently, as assistant dean of clinical curricular integration. He is a clerkship director and co-course director for myriad ambulatory, family medicine, and primary care skills courses. In 2023, he was named dean of the osteopathic medicine program. 

He is on staff at Main Line Health 鈥 Lankenau Medical Center. He previously served as an attending physician, as director of medical education and as program director of the PCOM/Suburban Community Hospital Family Medicine Residency at Suburban Community Hospital in Norristown.

Dr. Bidey serves as president of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Family Physicians Society (POFPS). He sits on the Board of Governors of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) and acts as department chair of various ACOFP committees. He also chairs the NBOME Clinical Decision-Making and Key Features Content Committee. He is a member of ACOFP, POFPS, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. At PCOM, he is a member of the Student Professional Conduct Committee and faculty advisor to the PCOM Student Chapter of ACOFP and the PCOM Student Chapter of Primary Care Progress.

Dr. Bidey has been recognized for his dedicated work both as a teacher and clinician. His honors include Outstanding Advisor of the Year (PCOM; received three times), Osteopathic Family Medicine Educator of the Year (ACOFP), the Frederick J. Solomon, DO FACGP Award for Merit (POFPS), and Case Writer of the Year (NBOME), among others.  

Dr. Bidey holds a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University, a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from PCOM, and a master of science in education degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Board-certified by the AOBFP in family medicine and OMT, he is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

Clayton Runfalo, MD, practices family medicine at Ochsner Health Center - Gonzales in Gonzales, Louisiana, and is the Ochsner director of community outreach and development in Ascension Parish. He is frequently interviewed on a wide range of topics, including men's health issues, rural health, vaccines, nutrition and weight loss. 

Dr. Runfalo earned a medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans. He completed an internship in rural family medicine with the Bogalusa Medical Center-Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa, Louisiana, and a residency in family medicine with Baton Rouge General Hospital. Rachael Kermis, MD, practices family medicine at Ochsner Health. She earned a medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine and completed residency in family medicine at Baton Rouge General in Louisiana. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians. In her practice, Dr. Kermis provides multigenerational care by seeing newborns to adults.

Ammar Husan, MD, is a board-certified family physician who emphasizes comprehensive treatment and the need for healing both mentally and physically. He has conducted extensive traumatic brain research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Dr. Husan earned a medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas in St. Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. He also holds an MBA in health care management. He completed a residency in family medicine at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport. He is a member of the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association and Obesity Medicine Association.
