Steven D. Cohen is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. He is well known for helping leaders communicate with confidence, influence, and authority. Dr. Cohen has been quoted in media outlets such as the Financial Times, Forbes, Slate, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, and NBC 麻豆传媒. He also was featured in the BBC Radio documentary, 鈥淐hurchill鈥檚 Secret Cabinet.鈥

Dr. Cohen鈥檚 work examines the communication behaviors of effective leaders, with a particular focus on executive presence. His research has appeared in national and international publications, including College Teaching, Communication Teacher, The International Journal of Listening, and Toastmaster magazine. Dr. Cohen is the author of two books, Public Speaking: The Path to Success and Lessons from the Podium: Public Speaking as a Leadership Art. He is also the editor of Speaking for Success: Readings and Resources, a collection of essential articles on the art of public speaking.

Dr. Cohen frequently teaches Executive Education courses on public speaking, persuasive communication, and business writing. He has created custom courses and leadership development programs for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. Dr. Cohen is a core faculty member for the Executive Certificate in Business Communication and previously served as the Academic Program Director for Executive Education.

Before his academic career, Dr. Cohen spent several years working in the private sector. He was an assistant vice president and team leader at Bank of America and later became a senior strategy consultant at IBM Global Business Services. In addition, Dr. Cohen was the founder and chairman of Friends for Life of America, a national nonprofit organization that improves the quality of life for pediatric cancer patients and their families.

Adam Blood, PhD

Adam Blood, instructor of communication, teaches public speaking and is the director of the UWF Speech and Debate program.

Blood previously coached speech and debate teams at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and University of Central Missouri. Blood has focused his research on ideographs, virtue discourse, loyalty rhetoric, the rhetoric of religion, and demagoguery.

In addition to his research interests, Blood has taught multiple communication courses with concentration in areas including rhetoric, media and basic and professional communication.

Mardia Bishop, Ph.D.

Mardia Bishop holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, and a B.A. from Thomas More University. She is a Teaching Professor and the Director of Public Speaking Instruction for the Communication Department at the University of Illinois, where she teaches courses in storytelling, listening, and business and professional communication. She also supervises and trains graduate teaching assistants on pedagogy. She consistently is on the Faculty Ranked as Excellent List and has several awards for teaching excellence.

Bishop also serves as a communication consultant to organizations and in that capacity has developed and facilitated numerous interactive workshops that focus on Belonging, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Active Listening; Conflict Management; and Mindfulness Practices for Leaders. Her most recent consulting client includes the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Libraries for whom she developed a six-week workshop series that helps participants identify and manage their implicit biases, use inclusive language and behaviors, listen through discomfort, and address microaggressions.

In 2021, Bishop and her colleagues were one of the ten winners of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine’s Health Make-A-Thon. In 2022, they were awarded a Jump ARCHES grant and Provost’s Call-to-Action grant. All awards funded an innovative virtual reality-based cultural competency training for medical students to reduce healthcare disparities. The prototypes for the training are currently being assessed with the assistance of Carle medical students, Carle and UIC medical residents, and Creighton medical students.

Bishop has presented at multiple conferences on addressing microaggressions, mediational communication, listening, using mindfulness practices in public speaking, and training and mentoring graduate teaching assistants.
