Professor Gavin Phillipson is based in the Bristol Law School. As an expert in media law, he has explored media intrusion and the right to privacy from the media, along with the creation of media codes of practice, regulation of online speech, and the online propaganda of terrorism. Among his core interests is how the Human Rights Act links to the British Constitution, especially in the context of the political perceptions of excessive judicial power and contemporary controls on Executive prerogative powers. Professor Philipson's work on defamation significantly impacted the reform of English libel law. He has been a member of the Ministry of Justice Working Group on Libel, and previously worked in worked in the House of Commons as an Academic Parliamentary Fellow (2018-19) and sits on the Code Committee of IMPRESS, the UK鈥檚 only Leveson-compliant press regulator.

Jon Gould is a distinguished scholar in justice policy, social change and government reform who has held key positions in the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Science Foundation. He assumed the deanship on Jan. 1, 2022.

Gould leads the nation鈥檚 first school of social ecology, established in 1970 in response to high demand for more socially relevant research. For more than 50 years, the school has been an internationally recognized pioneer in developing interdisciplinary approaches to social problems. Its highly ranked faculty in criminology, law and society; urban planning and public policy; and psychological science engage in research and education to foster informed social action and make the world a better place.

Gould鈥檚 expertise covers justice policy, social change and government reform. He was the principal investigator for the Preventing Wrongful Convictions Project, a multiyear research initiative funded by the National Institute of Justice. He is the author of five books and more than 100 articles and reports on such diverse subjects as erroneous convictions, indigent defense, prosecutorial innovation, police behavior, hate speech, sexual harassment and international human rights.

Gould has filled a range of government leadership roles, including senior policy adviser in the U.S. Department of Justice and director of the Law & Social Sciences Program at the National Science Foundation. In 2015, U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts appointed him as reporter for a committee of the federal courts evaluating the operation of the Criminal Justice Act. Gould is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a former U.S. Supreme Court Fellow and a former trustee of the Law & Society Association. He received the Administration of Justice Award from the U.S. Supreme Court Fellows Alumni Association in 2017.

Dr Ronan Lee is a Doctoral Prize Fellow at Loughborough University London鈥檚 Institute for Media and Creative Industries where his research focuses on the Rohingya, genocide, hate speech, migration, and Asian politics.

Ronan鈥檚 book 鈥淢yanmar鈥檚 Rohingya Genocide: Identity, History and Hate Speech鈥� was published by Bloomsbury in 2021, and he was awarded the 2021 Early Career Emerging Scholar Prize by the International Association of Genocide Scholars.

Ronan has a professional background in politics, media, and public policy. He was formerly a Queensland State Member of Parliament (2001-2009) and served on the frontbench as a Parliamentary Secretary (2006-2008) in portfolios including Justice, Main Roads, and Local Government. He has also worked as a senior government advisor, and as an election strategist and campaign manager.
