A former teacher in elementary school, Pierre Dillenbourg graduated in educational science (University of Mons, Belgium). He started his research on learning technologies in 1984. He obtained a PhD in computer science from the University of Lancaster (UK), in the domain of artificial intelligence applications for education. He has been assistant professor at the University of Geneva. He joined EPFL in 2002. He has been the academic director of Center for Digital Education, which implements the MOOC strategy of EPFL (over 2 million registrations). He is full professor in learning technologies in the School of Computer & Communication Sciences, where he is the head of the CHILI Lab: "Computer-Human Interaction for Learning & Instruction". He is the director of the leading house DUAL-T, which develops technologies for dual vocational education systems (carpenters, florists,...). With EPFL colleagues, he launched in 2017 the Swiss EdTech Collider, an incubator with 80 start-ups in learning technologies. In 2018, he co-founded LEARN, the EPFL Center of Learning Sciences that brings together the local initiatives in educational innovation. He is a fellow of the International Society for Learning Sciences.

Pushan Jani, MD, associate professor of pulmonary and sleep medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, has been keeping up with the rise of tobacco substitutes such as e-cigarettes and is available to comment on this development. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Users inhale this aerosol into their lungs. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. Jani, who is also affiliated with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and UT Physicians, has several issues with the tobacco substitutes. According to published research data, the flavoring agents used in vaping products can cause inflammation and damage to the lungs. While there is no tobacco, users are still getting nicotine. The impact of vaping to bystanders is not known. In practice since 2007, Jani is a full-time interventional pulmonologist and bedside educator. Jani’s clinical expertise is in procedural care, including electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsies (EBUS), transtracheal oxygen catheter insertions, and percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy. Jani can also speak about hazardous conditions after chemical fires and other disasters.

Modupe Idowu, MD, treats patients with sickle cell anemia, myeloproliferative neoplasm, thrombotic disorders, and hematologic malignancy including lymphoproliferative disorders, plasma cell dyscracias, and leukemias. Her research interests in clinical and translational investigations involve sickle cell anemia and thrombotic disorders. She is the medical director of the UT Physicians Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center.

Epps is a nationally recognized expert on the Supreme Court. A former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, Epps focuses on criminal law and criminal procedure 鈥� and his scholarly approach draws upon history, philosophy, political science and economics. His research analyzes the criminal justice system using the tools and insights of structural public law and institutional design; he also researches and writes about constitutional theory and federal courts. His scholarship has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, the Yale Law Journal, the Michigan Law Review, and the NYU Law Review, and his writing for popular audiences has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post, Vox and The Atlantic.

Sachs is a renowned expert on health policy and drug law. She is a scholar of innovation policy whose work explores the interaction of intellectual property law, food and drug regulation and health law. Her work explores problems of innovation and access to new health care technologies. Sachs鈥� scholarship has or will have appeared in journals that include the Michigan Law Review, the Minnesota Law Review, the Harvard Law Review, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Timothy McBride is an influential health policy analyst and leading health economist shaping the national agenda in health insurance, health reform, rural health care, Medicare and Medicaid policy, health economics, and access to health care. McBride studies the effects of health reform at the state and national levels, the uninsured, diabetes policy, Medicare Advantage, and long-term entitlement reform. McBride has been active in testifying before Congress and consulting with policy constituents on health reform, health insurance issues and rural health policy. He is a member of the Rural Policy Research Institute Health Panel that provides expert advice on rural health issues to the U.S. Congress and other policymakers.

Losos is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of evolutionary biology. In partnership with the Missouri Botanical Garden and the St. Louis Zoo, Losos leads the Living Earth Collaborative, an academic center dedicated to advancing the study of biodiversity. The Living Earth Collaborative serves as a hub to facilitate interdisciplinary research among plant and animal biologists and other scholars across a wide range of fields, bringing together the world鈥檚 leading scholars in the field of biodiversity to address the most pressing issue facing humankind today 鈥� the ability to sustain life on Earth. 

Wallace is an internationally recognized authority on Michelangelo and his contemporaries. In addition to more than forty articles (as well as two works of fiction), he is the author and editor of four books on Michelangelo: Michelangelo at San Lorenzo: The Genius as Entrepreneur (Cambridge 1994); Michelangelo: Selected Scholarship in English (Garland, 1996), Michelangelo: The Complete Sculpture, Painting, and Architecture (Hugh Lauter Levin, 1998), and most recently, Michelangelo: Selected Scholarship in English (Garland 1999). He is currently writing a new biography of Michelangelo.

鈥婸rofessor Wanzo鈥檚 research interests include African American literature and culture, critical race theory, feminist theory, the history of popular fiction in the United States, cultural studies, theories of affect, and graphic storytelling.

McCune has written widely on issues relating to masculinity, particularly black masculinity, as well as queer studies, sexuality theory, critical race theory, performance studies and popular culture. His book, 鈥淪exual Discretion: Black Masculinity and the Politics of Passing鈥� (University of Chicago Press, 2014), examines the lives of African-American men who have sex with men while maintaining a heterosexual lifestyle in public.

Knott's research examines the optimal environment and policies (economic, industrial and firm) for innovation, and is best summarized in her book, How Innovation Really Works (March 2017). This interest stems from issues arising during an earlier career in defense electronics at Hughes Aircraft Company. 

Marie Griffith, the John C. Danforth Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis, is currently the director of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics and the editor of the Center鈥檚 journal, Religion & Politics. Griffith is a frequent media commentator and public speaker on current issues pertaining to religion and politics, including the changing profile of American evangelicals and ongoing conflicts over gender, sexuality and marriage.

Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella is the President's Distinguished Professor of Plant Genomics and the Director for the Center for Functional Genomics of Abiotic Stress in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Dr. Herrera-Estrella came to Texas Tech in 2018 thanks to a grant from the State of Texas Governor's University Research Initiative (GURI). He leads a team in the Center that examines how plants adapt to thrive in the presence of environmental stresses such as extreme heat and cold, drought and in the presence of brackish water sources. Herrera-Estrella is known and respected worldwide for his work in cotton genomics, having earned the distinction in 2015 as one of the 100 most influential people in biotechnology by Scientific American. He previously served as the director and full professor of the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (LANGEBIO) in Guanajuato, Mexico, where remains a professor emeritus. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that allow plants to cope with a continuously changing environment. In particular, he has studied the two fundamental processes of molecular responses to light as a source of energy and a developmental signal, and nutrient availability. Herrera-Estrella was able to eventually identify DNA regulatory elements that allow plants to activate genes in response to light stimuli and the protein sequence present in many corresponding gene products that ultimately allow participation in the photosynthesis process. A holder of 15 patents, Herrera-Estrella has published more than 180 research papers and 47 book chapters and other reviews while having delivered more than 200 presentations on his work. He served as a senior international research scholar at the Howard Hughes Biomedical Institute from 2012 to 2017 and earned the Dr. Luis Federico Leloir Award in 2012 from the Argentinian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Herrera-Estrella earned his doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in genetics from the State University of Ghent, Belgium. He received his master鈥檚 degree in genetics and molecular biology from the Centro de Investigaci贸n y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Polit茅cnico Nacional, and his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biol贸gicas Instituto Polit茅cnico Nacional.

Harvinder Gill is a graduate advisor, associate professor and Whitacre Endowed Chair of Science and Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering within the Texas Tech University Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. He directs the Gil Lab where he and his colleagues perform fundamental and translational research in the fields of drug delivery, vaccines, immunotherapy, and nanomedicine to help address some of the pressing biomedical challenges facing human health. His research integrates the knowledge and tools from various disciplines including engineering, chemistry, biology, immunology, recombinant engineering, and micro-nano-technology. Gill currently works to discover innovative drug and vaccine delivery platforms aimed at maximizing stimulation of mucosal immunity in order to address the challenges related to influenza and HIV infectious diseases as well as developing a delivery system for localized delivery of cancer drugs directly into oral tumors. Dr. Gill also is working on developing a delivery method to eliminate peanut allergies through a grant from the NIH, working to transform pollen grain shells into vehicles for delivery of allergy vaccines, and using microneedles to eliminate the need for regular needles to deliver vaccines. Gill earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Panjab University in 1994 and his doctorate in bioengineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007.

Darren Hudson is a professor and the Larry Combest Endowed Chair for Agricultural Competitiveness and Director of the International Center for Agricultural Competitiveness and the Cotton Economics Research Institute at Texas Tech University since 2008. Hudson鈥檚 research interests include agricultural policy and trade, economic development, marketing and consumer demand, and behavioral economics.  He participates in the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute consortium producing annual baseline projections for cotton for the group. Hudson is a past-President of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association an also is a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association. Maria C.E. Jacobs, M.D., leads the Radiation Oncology team at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
