Gyamfi-Bannerman specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for patients who may have obstetric complications with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and thrombophilias. She is internationally recognized for her work in this area, with a primary focus on preterm birth, both in prevention and in the use of antenatal corticosteroids, or steroids.

Alexander Khalessi, MD, MBA

, is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in complex cranial surgery, endovascular neurosurgery, stroke care, and neurological oncology. He is chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health and professor of neurological surgery, radiology and neurosciences and the Don and Karen Cohn Chancellor's Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Khalessi provides both open surgical and minimally invasive, catheter-based approaches to complex neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumors, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), carotid disease and ischemic stroke.

Khalessi is a founding member of the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC) that advises the FDA on early clinical feasibility for emerging neurovascular devices. He serves on the NIH Interventional Advisory Panel for StrokeNet, which provides scientific oversight for federally funded research in neurovascular disease.

Christopher Longhurst, MD, MS

, is the chief medical officer (CMO) and chief digital officer (CDO) at UC San Diego Health. This dual, complementary role provides leadership to medical staff, ensuring that standards and protocols are in place to provide the highest quality of care to patients. He also serves as an associate dean at the School of Medicine, overseeing and aligning our education and research missions within the clinical environment, and leading our journey to become a highly reliable, learning health system.

As CMO, Longhurst is responsible for maintaining excellence in clinical care, including regulatory, patient and clinician satisfaction, quality and safety, and medical affairs. He works alongside leaders at UC San Diego Health, the School of Medicine, and UC Health to improve care delivery and oversees UC San Diego Health’s reputation for delivering safe, innovative, patient-centered care.

Longhurst, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in the care of newborns. As a newborn hospitalist, he meets with parents and their babies during their postpartum stay in the hospital, providing daily care to infants. This care includes newborn examinations, screening tests and performing procedures like frenotomy.

Longhurst is passionate about implementing innovative digital solutions that help improve the patient experience. As the CDO, he leads UC San Diego Health’s technology strategy, overseeing initiatives that advance the infrastructure across UC San Diego and the UC Health system. In addition, Longhurst leads the clinical activities of the academic medical center, working alongside clinical leaders to guide the planning of quality, safety, and performance excellence of programs.  He is also faculty in the Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Pediatrics in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, maintaining an active clinical practice as a newborn hospitalist and pursuing scholarship in care quality, patient safety, and health informatics.

Kristin Mekeel, MD

, is a board-certified transplant surgeon at UC San Diego Health and professor in the Department of Surgery at UC San Diego Health. She specializes in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation surgery in adults and children. She performs operations in patients with conditions such as chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, liver cancer and diabetes.

Mekeel serves as chief of the Division of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery where she leads a group of four surgeons performing over 250 transplants, living and deceased donor organ procurements, and other surgeries per year. She also serves as vice-chair of Quality for the Department of Surgery and program director for Surgical Quality at UC San Diego Health. In these roles, Mekeel oversees quality and safety for operating rooms and surgical subspecialties.

She is also program director of the UC San Diego Center for Transplantation. Her leadership helped the program achieve a record number of transplants with excellent outcomes in 2019. She is an advocate for health care quality and patient safety in organ transplantation and throughout the hospital.

Mekeel champions organ donation and transplantation both locally and nationally and has served nationally on the United Network of Organ Sharing Pediatric Committee and Operations and Safety committees. She is also a board member for the John Brockington Foundation, which raises money and awareness for transplantation and organ donation in San Diego.

Jess Mandel, MD

Chief, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

, is a board-certified pulmonologist who treats patients with a variety of respiratory conditions. His interests include pulmonary vascular disease, critical care medicine, and pulmonary vascular malformations such hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (a disorder that affects blood vessels).

He has treated many patients with COVID-19 and led efforts to assist health care professionals in Tijuana during the pandemic.

Mandel is the Kenneth M. Moser Professor of Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division and serves as vice chair for education in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Mandel was honored with a Presidential Citation by the San Diego County Medical Society for his involvement in their COVID response. More significantly, he helped organize relief efforts in Tijuana and Mexicali, reducing the cross-border spread of COVID and saving hundreds of lives.

He is active in several leadership roles with the American Thoracic Society, including serving as chair of their international conference.

Vaishal Tolia, MD, MPH

, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician. He treats and cares for people in the emergency department and urgent care, including those with life-threatening or critical conditions. This care may include evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization and referring patients to appropriate specialty departments.

Tolia is medical director of the Emergency Department at UC San Diego Health, where he oversees operations of both emergency departments at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla. He serves as director of the Emergency Department's Observation Unit and the Gary and Mary West Senior Emergency Care Unit (housed within the La Jolla Emergency Department), which is a state-of-the-art unit designed to enhance the care for older adults and meet the unique needs of seniors.

Tolia is also a professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include patient safety, observation medicine and chest pain protocols.

Prof Patricios (MBBCh MMedSci FACSM FFSEM (UK) FFIMS) has been in sports medicine practice for over 22 years. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences. Jon is founder and Director of Sports Concussion South Africa, sports concussion consultant to World Rugby, a board member of the international Concussion in Sports Group and on the scientific committee for the International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (UK) and the International Sports Medicine Federation. Jon serves on the Advisory Board of the University of Washington, Seattle Sports Health and Safety Institute.  He is a senior associate editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Current Sports Medicine Reports (USA) and served 2 terms as President of the South African Sports Medicine Association. Jon has been team physician to school, club, provincial and international sports teams in rugby, cricket, soccer, athletics and basketball, has been member of the Cricket South Africa and SA Rugby medical committees, the Discovery Rockies Comrades Marathon Panel of experts and has served on tribunals for the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport.

Kara Watts, MD

Dr. Kara L. Watts, Associate Professor of Urology, joined the urology faculty at Montefiore in 2016. She completed a fellowship in Quality and Performance Improvement in Healthcare and an extended observership in focal ablation for prostate cancer in the UK. She serves as the Director of Quality Assurance and Improvement for the Department of Urology and leads the prostate cancer screening program.

Dr. Watts' clinical practice focuses on BPH, endourology, and prostate cancer detection and ablation. She also offers image-guided focal ablation for localized prostate cancer. She has a particular interest in active surveillance of prostate cancer and incorporating imaging modalities, particularly MRI imaging, into the diagnosis and treatment of localized prostate cancer.

Dr. Watts has numerous peer-reviewed publications, written several book chapters and co-edited a textbook. She has presented both nationally and internationally at various conferences and with the AUA regarding her work on quality improvement in healthcare and active surveillance and focal ablation in prostate cancer. She is involved in several national and international committees and editorial boards, including the AUA Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee, the Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance Research Initiative Advisory Committee, and the Urology Times Editorial Board.

Dr. Koo is an associate professor of urology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He maintains an active multidisciplinary research program supported by the National Institutes of Health studying the pathophysiology of urinary stone disease. He also leads clinical trials evaluating new technologies that can enhance surgical outcomes and patient safety during endoscopic surgery. He participates in the clinical education of students, residents, and fellows, and conducts research in surgical simulation and education science.

A frequent contributor to the medical press, Dr. Koo is an editorial board member of prominent medical journals and serves on numerous committees and advisory councils of the American Urological Association, Endourological Society, and American College of Surgeons. He is also a national leader in health policy and advocacy and was previously a fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Laura Kray, PhD

Laura Kray is a leading expert on the social psychological barriers influencing women’s career attainment. Kray is the recipient of multiple research awards from the Academy of Management, the International Association of Conflict Management, and the California Management Review. Kray is a fellow to both the Association for Psychological Science and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. From 2017 to 2018, she was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Some of her current research seeks to debunk popular myths about the gender pay gap and to identify solutions to gender inequality in the workplace.

Kray’s research has been supported multiple times by the National Science Foundation and has been featured in a wide range of media outlets, including the Washington Post, New Yorker, National Public Radio, Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Financial Times, Slate, Forbes, Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Scientific American, Businessweek, and Time.

In addition to research and teaching, Kray consults frequently with global organizations seeking to develop the next generation of leaders who are committed to addressing issues of diversity and inclusion. Kray founded the Women’s Executive Leadership Program of Berkeley Executive Education in 2008 and she remains the faculty director today. She is also the faculty director of the Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership.

Lumkile Mondi, Ph.D.

Lumkile Mondi is a senior lecturer at the School of Economics and Business Science of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mr Mondi is a strategist, an economist and a leader. He has worked extensively on the African continent, undertaking his responsibilities at the Industrial Development Corporation (“IDC”), where he was an executive for 11 years. He is also the chairman of Thelo Rolling Stock Leasing and a non-executive director of Sedibelo Platinum Mines Limited. He previously served on the board of ArcelorMittal South Africa.

Mr Mondi has more than 20 years of postgraduate experience and over eight years working in financial markets in interest rate derivatives and asset and liability management. Mr Mondi is also involved in the Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (“BRICS”) think tanks on institutional strengthening and coordination. He has presented at and participated in various conferences worldwide, including the United Nations, the World Bank, the Brazilian Development Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (“OECD”). Mr Mondi has travelled extensively throughout the world, bringing innovation to his work for a better world for all.

John Stremlau, Ph.D.

Prof John Stremlau is Visiting Professor of International Relations at Wits University and one of our past visiting Bradlow Fellows.

He served from January 2006 until January 2015 as vice president for peace programs at The Carter Centre, where he oversaw the Centre’s programmes to advance human rights, democracy, and conflict resolution globally; regional cooperation in the Americas; and promotion of grassroots democracy, rule of law, and social justice in China.

From 1998 to 2006, he resided in South Africa where he was Jan Smuts Professor, Head of the International Relations Department, and the founding co-director of the Centre for Africa’s International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Previously, he served as senior adviser to the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict in Washington, D.C. (1994-1998), deputy director for policy planning in the office of the U.S. Secretary of State (1989-1994), strategic planning officer for the World Bank (1988-1989), and an officer of the Rockefeller Foundation (1974-1987), directing its international relations division from 1984-1987.

Prof Stremlau publishes extensively on foreign affairs and is a frequent media commentator on international network news programmes. He wrote ‘The International Politics of the Nigerian Civil War’ and has edited several books.

Alex Van Den Heever, Ph.D.

Prof Alex van den Heever presently holds the Chair of Social Security Systems Administration and Management Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand and is an adjunct professor in the Wits School of Governance. Alex van den holds a master's in economics from the University of Cape Town and has worked in the areas of health economics and finance, public finance, and social security in various capacities over the past 23 years. This includes participation in the Melamet Commission of Inquiry into medical schemes, the Taylor Committee of Inquiry into Comprehensive Social Security, and the Ministerial Task Team on Social Health Insurance.

Over the period 2000 to 2010, he worked as an advisor to the Council for Medical Schemes, which he was responsible for establishing, and in an advisory capacity to the social security policy processes (including the Department of Social Development, the National Treasury, and the Inter-departmental Task Team on Social Security) taking forward the recommendations of the Taylor Committee.

 is Professor of Economics, , and Director of the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits). His research interests include inequality, climate justice, competition policy, employment, the informal economy, gender and economic policy, and industrial development. Imraan has led the initiative at Wits to establish the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies - a multi-disciplinary, cross-country initiative to promote research and policy change to promote greater equality in the global South. In addition to his duties as Pro VC, Imraan leads the SCIS. Imraan has led and participated in a number of large national and international studies. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his research expertise in economic development. Imraan is a part-time member of the Competition Tribunal in South Africa. He is also a commissioner of the National Minimum Wage Commission, and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (Assaf) Standing Committee on Science for the Reduction of Poverty and Inequality. In August 2016, Professor Valodia was appointed by (then) Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to chair the Advisory Panel on the National Minimum Wage. This led to the introduction of a National Minimum Wage in South Africa. In early 2018, he was appointed to a Panel to advise the Minister of Economic Development on amendments to the Competition Act. More recently, he was appointed by the Minister of Finance to a Panel of Experts to advise the Minister on Value-Added Taxes. In late 2019, Professor Valodia was appointed by President Ramaphosa to the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) in South Africa.

Yaniv Konchitchki, PhD

Professor Konchitchki is an award-winning expert in monetary economics, macroeconomic forecasting, inflation & economic growth, capital markets & corporate financial reporting, Fintech, and AI/alternative data investing.

As a Professional Macro Forecaster for the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Founder and faculty Director of the Berkeley Fintech Program, and a founding father of Macro-Accounting—which identifies interdisciplinary links between macroeconomics, capital markets, and corporate financial reporting—he conducts research on real-world matters such as monetary economics, inflation, GDP, Fed’s policy, inequality, stock prices, & interest rates.

His specialization in capital markets includes developing investment algorithms and helping companies with business plans & raising capital. Also, he developed various real-world tools and is actively engaging in identifying stock- & macro-level movements as well as improving forecasts for the Fed.

He is a full-time tenured associate professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. His PhD is from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, and he also holds a CPA license and an MSc from Stanford’s Statistics. He also worked years as a Senior Economist, as well as a CPA and Senior Financial Analysis Expert for PwC.

He has vast experience in academia and industry, including in macroeconomic forecasting & policy-making, financial reporting & analysis, economic modeling, programming, developing investment algorithms, audit, litigation, and Fintech. He currently conducts pioneering research on financial-based solutions to real-world problems—benefiting macroeconomics, finance, accounting, and related disciplines.

David Evan Harris, MS

David Evan Harris is a Chancellor’s Public Scholar at UC Berkeley and a continuing lecturer at the Haas School of Business. Harris teaches courses including AI Ethics for Leaders; Social Movements & Social Media; Civic Technology; and Scenario Planning & Futures Thinking. Harris is an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS); Center for Latin American Studies; Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL); and the Business and Public Policy Group at UC Berkeley.

In his previous role at Meta (formerly Facebook), Harris managed teams of quantitative and qualitative researchers working on responsible AI, social impact, and civic integrity. During his close to five years with the company, he and his teams covered topic areas including AI fairness and inclusion; AI governance and accountability; global election integrity; misinformation; coordinated inauthentic behavior; hate speech; human rights; political violence; harassment and online safety for activists, journalists, and politicians; community organizing; civic participation; racial justice; authoritative information; volunteering and non-profit organizations.

At the Institute for the Future (IFTF), he served as research director, leading research on the future of media, philanthropy, governance, international development, and social movements from 2008-2018. Harris studied at the University of São Paulo (MS, Sociology) and UC Berkeley (BA, Political Economy of Environment & Development). As a student, he was an intern at the White House Council on Environmental Quality and a confidential assistant at the Office of Management and Budget, Natural Resources Division.

Harris is formally trained in sociology and specializes in methods including ethnography, in-depth interviews, aggregation of expert opinion, survey design, scenario planning, signals scanning, multi-stakeholder workshop facilitation and content analysis.

In 2004, he founded the Global Lives Project, a network of people working to build a video library of daily life around the world. Harris continues to support the Global Lives project with help of talented teams of UC Berkeley students through the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program.

Karen Hofman is Research Professor and founding Director of the SAMRC Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science/ PRICELESS SA at the University of Witwatersrand. A qualified paediatrician, she was on faculty at Johns Hopkins and served as Policy Director at the US NIH Fogarty Center. For the past 15 years, Karen has led policy research to evaluate interventions both inside the health system and in other sectors that provide the biggest return on investment for health.
She is widely published in global health with more than 150 peer reviewed publications and has received the Wits Vice Chancellor’s Social Impact Research Award in 2020 and the Science-for-Society Gold Medal from the Academy of Science of South Africa in 2022.
